Observations on some of the people and the culture of poker. Also a little off topic ranting now and then.

A thread from 1998 rgp
Here's a thread started with a question about psychological impact of color of the suits where Caro/Sklansky/Carson/and even Paul Phillips (who once vowed to spit in my face if he ever met me) actually agree that people are more likely to draw to spade flushes than to flushes in other suits.
With the hand histories available today somebody could actually test that hypothesis.
That's funny because I used to play a lot of bridge and I do sort of feel AsTs and AhTh are stronger than the "minors". I know it's not good thinking but when you've trained your brain one way...
I think that partly because of the bridge suit ranks there's a cultural predisposition towards spades. There's also the Qs being a point card in Hearts. And, of course the Spades game.
Getting the Best of It is David's personal favorites among his work. It's a very basic book, covering some poker, some general gambling, some biographical stuff about David. It's his attempt to convey the idea of how to get an edge in a gamble. He does a pretty good job of it. A really good book selection for beginning gamblers.
I have a signed edition, it was a gift from David.
If you're a somewhat experienced poker player and have a stronger than average background in mathematics, then Mathematics of Poker is for you.
If you're relatively new to poker and don't have any background in mathematics then you might be better with a more basic book on simple probability applications to gambling like Sklansky's Getting the Best of It

When I first started I noticed that women were playing a lot of junk hands suited in diamonds. I didn't keep on observing though.
